Remote Support

North Bay Tech Help uses RustDesk for secure remote support. Follow the steps below before or during your scheduled support session.

Start here

Choose the right support option

One-time quick support

Best for a new customer or a single scheduled appointment. On Windows, RustDesk can be run as a temporary executable for a quick session. The customer still shares their RustDesk ID and approves the session while you are working together.

Start quick support

Ongoing unattended support

Best for an active support relationship where North Bay Tech Help may need to reconnect later. This requires installation, a permanent password, startup settings, and testing while you are with the customer.

Windows Quick Connect

For a new customer or a one-time appointment, use the official RustDesk Windows app directly. This avoids a custom unsigned download and keeps the Windows SmartScreen experience as clean as possible.

  1. Download the official RustDesk Windows .exe.
  2. Open the downloaded file. If Windows asks, allow RustDesk to run.
  3. Enter the North Bay Tech Help server settings shown below if they are not already set.
  4. Share the Your ID number with North Bay Tech Help during your scheduled session.
  5. Approve the connection when North Bay Tech Help connects.

For restart support, lock-screen access, or ongoing unattended access, install RustDesk instead of only running it temporarily.

Step 1

Download RustDesk

Choose your device and install RustDesk. Windows, Mac, and Android links start the RustDesk 1.4.6 download directly from GitHub. iPhone and iPad open the App Store listing.

For a one-time Windows session, run the downloaded .exe and share the RustDesk ID shown on screen. For unattended Windows support, install RustDesk so the service can run in the background. Not sure which Mac you have? Contact North Bay Tech Help during your appointment and we will point you to the right installer.

Step 2

After RustDesk opens, look for Your ID. Send that ID to North Bay Tech Help by phone, text, or email during your scheduled support session.

Unattended access setup

Use this only when North Bay Tech Help and the customer agree to ongoing support. Set it up during an active session, then test it before you leave.

Mac and iMac

Mac setup

Mac installation is usually simple. The important part is choosing the right download and allowing the permissions macOS requires for remote support.

  1. Click the Apple menu, choose About This Mac, and check the chip type.
  2. If it says Apple M1, M2, M3, or M4, download the Mac Apple Silicon version. If it says Intel, download the Mac Intel version.
  3. Open the downloaded .dmg file.
  4. Drag RustDesk into Applications if the installer window asks you to.
  5. Open RustDesk from Applications. If macOS asks for confirmation, choose to open or allow RustDesk.
  6. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security.
  7. Allow RustDesk in Accessibility, Screen Recording, and Input Monitoring.
  8. Quit RustDesk completely, then reopen it.
  9. Go to Settings → Network → ID/Relay Server and enter the North Bay Tech Help server settings shown above.
Remote support FAQ

Common RustDesk questions

Is the key safe to show?

Yes. This is North Bay Tech Help's public RustDesk server key. It helps your app connect to the correct support server.

Is there a no-install quick support option?

On Windows, yes. For a one-time scheduled session, you can run the RustDesk .exe as a temporary app, share your RustDesk ID, and approve the connection. For ongoing unattended support, RustDesk should be installed so it can run as a service.

Can North Bay Tech Help access my computer anytime?

No. Standard sessions require you to approve the connection. Unattended access is optional and only works when it has been set up by agreement, the computer is online, and RustDesk is running.

Why does Mac ask for permissions?

macOS requires permission before any remote support app can view or control the screen.
